Dear Colleagues,
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our dear colleague, Dr. Menachem Miodovnik. A highly respected and dedicated member of our maternal-fetal medicine community, his loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
Dr. Miodovnik was not only a valued colleague but also a dear friend and an integral part of our conference organizing committee. As a key member of the Philadelphia Prenatal Conference Team, his contributions were invaluable, and his absence is already profoundly felt.
His commitment to maternal-fetal medicine, his professionalism, vast knowledge, friendship, and kindness left a lasting impact on our team and the broader medical community.
We have lost a cherished friend, and he is already greatly missed.
Thank you, Menachem, for all that you have done for us.
A “Celebration of Menachem’s Life” will be held on March 30, 2025 from 1-4 PM at Top of the Town, 1400 14th St N, Arlington, VA 22209. We will have a reception starting at 1 PM with a brief service at 2 PM.
The following message was shared by his family:
Dr. Menachem Miodovnik, dearly loved husband of Victoria Pemberton, passed away on Feb 25, 2025. Our children Ayal, Amir, Jason, Christina and Matt; their spouses Rachel, Jenny, Tayra, Bill and Shelley; and our grandchildren Olivia, Ella, Ariella, Gabriel and Jonathan are left with wonderful memories of our yearly Thanksgiving family events, birthdays, holidays, summer vacations and most recently Olivia’s Bat Mitzvah, that we will cling to when our hearts are heavy. Menachem’s brother Yaki, and his family; Vicki’s mom, brother and sister and their families; and our extended family, and friends are all in mourning but grateful that Menachem wasn’t left to suffer.
Menachem was born in Jerusalem and studied philosophy, Arabic and international relations, aspiring to become Israel’s first ambassador to Egypt. However, his experiences as a medic and paratrooper in the Six-day and Yom-Kippur wars inspired him to change course and dedicate his life to medicine. He earned his medical degree from the Hebrew University Hadassah Medical School and later completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He held esteemed academic positions as a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Cincinnati, Columbia University, and Georgetown University.
In 2003, Menachem and Vicki moved to Washington, D.C., where Dr. Miodovnik served as Chair of Women’s Services at Washington Hospital Center. After a brief retirement, he became a medical officer at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development and later served as a consultant to Inova Health System. Though Dr. Miodovnik built a respected career in the U.S., his heart never left Israel.
Menachem’s subspecialty and passion was diabetes in pregnancy, where he received NIH funding for a decades-long grant that followed women with Type 1 diabetes through challenging pregnancies. Those “babies” are still being followed as are their children. He authored over 130 peer-reviewed publications throughout his distinguished career and his research helped shape clinical guidelines for high-risk pregnancies. Menachem was one of three founders of the Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group, sponsoring conferences since 1997 to advance research and care for diabetes in pregnancy. He was ardent about bringing individuals from diverse specialties and younger physicians into this area of research. In 2019, he earned the Diabetes in Pregnancy Study Group of North America's Lifetime Achievement Award.
